$1 million for Mt Gambier airport upgrade

The South Australian State Government has invested $1.086 million towards an upgrade of Mt Gambier Airport, and is calling on the Federal Liberal Government to also invest in the infrastructure project.

The funding boost brings the State Government’s total contribution to more than $4 million, including $2.95 million announced in 2016.

The $12.22 million upgrade will cater for larger aircraft and pave the way for additional services with more passengers and freight.

The airport is currently serviced by one commercial airline with flights to and from Adelaide and Melbourne as well as charter flights.

The upgraded airport will help boost visitor numbers to the region, which will provide a shot in the arm for the region and create more jobs.

“An upgraded Mount Gambier Airport will not only help develop the tourism industry but also improve the airport’s ability to transport products in and out of the region,” said Regional Development Minister, Geoff Brock.

The airport is owned and operated by the District Council of Grant, which has made a financial contribution towards financing the upgrade.

The opportunity to increase the range and number of aircraft which can use the airport will benefit Mount Gambier and the wider region, including the forestry and wood products industry.

“The pressure is now on Tony Pasin to make sure the Federal Coalition Government commits funding to get the project off the ground,” said Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Stephen Mullighan.
