The NSW Government has invested $10 million for an urban development project in Queanbeyan, as part of its $170 million Drought Stimulus package.
The project aims to improve pedestrian access, boost safety and importantly support local retail.
The upgrades are planned for a section of Monaro Street, between Crawford and Lowe Streets. It is one of six stages of a plan to transform the Queanbeyan CBD over the next ten years.
The upgrades will deliver new wider walkways, improved drainage, lighting, seating and road refuges.
The works form a critical component of the broader CBD Masterplan endorsed by Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council and will reduce traffic noise and manage the flow of traffic in the CBD, providing greater safety for drivers and pedestrians.
NSW Deputy Premier, John Barilaro, said the announcement represented a light at the end of the tunnel for local businesses during an extremely challenging time.
“Monaro Street is already the heart of Queanbeyan, but this upgrade will ensure it remains a hive of activity,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This work will make this part of the CBD a nicer place to be and easier than ever to move around, whether you are getting your groceries or travelling to and from work.
“The upgrade will also provide an immediate boost to the local economy, creating work for locals so that money earned in the region stays in the region, which is especially important during this challenging time.”
