The contract for the delivery of the next stages of the Northern Road and Bringelly Road upgrades in Sydney West has been awarded, as part of the NSW Government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, said Lendlease will build the 11.5km section of The Northern Road between Peter Brock Drive and Mersey Road, as well as the 4.3km upgrade of Bringelly Road between King Street at Rossmore and The Northern Road at Bringelly.

“These upgrades will prepare one of Australia’s fastest growing region’s roads for future traffic growth and improve travel times for motorists by widening the existing roads to four lanes in each direction,” Mr Fletcher said.

“The Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan is transforming the economy of Western Sydney by supporting the Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, which will be operational by 2026.

“The Australian Government has committed up to $5.3 billion over 10 years in the 2017–18 Budget to build Western Sydney Airport through a new company, WSA Co.”

Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said the airport is already proving a catalyst for economic growth, while the road upgrades will greatly benefit residents, including by reducing local congestion.

“Nation building infrastructure like the new airport will put Western Sydney at the forefront of economic growth, and business confidence is sky high thanks to work to get the right infrastructure in place upfront,” Mr Ayres said.

“We’re cracking on with the delivery of vital arterial roads around the future airport site to ensure we can support residential and commercial growth, and meet future traffic demand.

“Once the entire $1.6 billion The Northern Road Upgrade is completed, motorists travelling between Narellan and Penrith will benefit from 35kmof upgraded road, meaning increased road capacity, less congestion and safer roads.”

Work on the upgrades is expected to begin in coming months and be completed by 2020.
