Light rail construction on Hunter Street will begin in September 2017 as part of the NSW Government’s $660 million Revitalising Newcastle program.

Revitalising Newcastle program director, Michael Cassel, said, “The light rail team has spent over a year laying the groundwork to ensure light rail construction will run as smoothly as possible..

“This includes creating new pedestrian and vehicle access points between Hunter Street and the harbour, and consultation with local businesses and residents to determine their needs during construction.

“It’s now time to get on with installing light rail tracks.”

The initial phase of light rail construction on Hunter Street will occur between Auckland and Darby Streets.

Works will include relocating essential services such as water, gas, electricity and telecommunications; and civil construction work including road reconfiguration and laying light rail track on the road.Work in this construction zone is due to be completed by the end of 2017.
