Sydney’s largest train service upgrade in a generation

Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink have announced the biggest single uplift to train services in a generation with more than 1,500 extra weekly services to boost frequency and capacity for millions of train customers.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, released the operator draft train timetable for 2017 so Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink staff can prepare customers for the changes.

New key highlights include:

  • More than 1,500 extra weekly services, including more than 750 on weekends
  • South West Sydney to receive a 92 per cent increase in services, including Leppington and Edmondson Park.
  • 71 per cent of stations will now receive a minimum 15 minute service frequency across most of the day – a 43 per cent increase
  • More than 40 per cent increase in the number of weekly services stopping at Parramatta
  • A 22 per cent service uplift at Penrith Station
  • New fast services between Liverpool and the Sydney CBD on the T3 Bankstown line

“There has been unprecedented growth in customer demand for train services over the past few years and we’re expecting a further 21 per cent growth in demand for train services by 2021,” Mr Constance said.

Along with improved reliability and better connections, the new timetable will bring the following improvements for customers:

  • More than 200 extra weekly services on the T8 Airport and South Line in non-peak times, as well as an extra 20 express trains per week in peak hour for Campbelltown and Macarthur customers to the CBD via the T8 Airport and South Line
  • More than 250 express trains every week between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, including 20 express trains during peak hours
  • 24 new express services between the Sydney CBD and the Blue Mountains on weekends
  • More than 160 new weekend T5 Cumberland Line services connecting South Western Sydney, Western Sydney and North West Sydney to expand services that currently run on weekdays only
  • Direct access on weekdays to Parramatta for Inner West customers for the first time
  • Greater frequency from popular Inner West stations like Stanmore with a 15 per cent increase in services across the week

“The changes are part of our ‘More Trains, More Services’ program, which will boost network capacity with more services, better infrastructure and 24 brand new eight-car trains,” Mr Constance said.

Howard Collins, Chief Executive of Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink, said the operator draft of the timetable, which has been handed to Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink to start preparing staff, is now online, but customers should hold off on planning journeys until the final version is released in October with the timetable coming into operation in late November 2017.

“We’ve released the operator draft of the timetable to help Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink get ready for this massive service uplift, but there may yet be tweaks to some service times,” Mr Collins said.

“The final customer timetable will be released with plenty of time for customers to plan their journeys before it kicks off.

“Customers can rest assured that leading up to day one we’ll have an extensive advertising campaign, along with plenty of information and announcements at stations across the network.”

The announcement comes after the refreshed Sydney Trains network map was released in early August 2017 in anticipation of the introduction of the new timetable by the end of 2017.

The ‘More Trains, More Services’ program is a capital investment of over $1.5 billion to provide an urgent uplift in customer service on Sydney’s rail network.
