Over $200 million in infrastructure projects for South Australia – committed to in the 2017/18 State Budget – will be considered by the Parliamentary Public Works Committee.
The submission includes key infrastructure projects, including the $31.4 million relocation of Adelaide metropolitan rail Operations Control Centre from its existing premises near SAMHRI to Dry Creek, the $16.4 million Port Adelaide rail spur, and the $174.3 million Oaklands Crossing.
The new Port Adelaide Spur Line will see train services reinstated back to the centre of Port Adelaide for the first time in almost 30 years.
The new one kilometre spur line will link the port’s commercial centre and the Dock One residential precinct to the Adelaide CBD.
It will provide frequent rail services for those who already call the area home and the many more set to live, work and visit Port Adelaide, which is undergoing a major redevelopment.
The Port Dock Railway Line Project will include the following works:
- New dual mainline connections from the Outer Harbor Line to the Port Spur and upgrade of the track and supporting infrastructure on the spur line
- New railway signalling system to control the junction and spur line, including train control system modifications
- A new Port Adelaide Railway Station and integration of the station with the local urban precinct
- Provision of a mainline connection to the National Railway Museum
Member for Port Adelaide, Susan Close, said it’s exciting to see plans coming along for returning train services to Port Adelaide for the first time in almost 30 years.
“This is a significant project in the ongoing renewal of Port Adelaide and with more and more people choosing to live and work here it’s important they have access to fast and reliable public transport,” Ms Close said.
The relocation of the Adelaide metropolitan rail operations control centre to the Dry Creek depot will allow the existing North Terrace control centre to be demolished, for the site to be made available for development of a new medical research facility.
The SAHMRI 2 building will include the only Proton Therapy Unit in the southern hemisphere and will expand SAHMRI’s capacity to conduct groundbreaking research, and dramatically increase Australian patients’ access to the best cancer care.
To avoid any disruption to Adelaide’s public transport services the new facility will be built and fully operational before operations are relocated.
Updated designs have been released for the Oaklands Crossing showing the rail line will be constructed under Morphett Road.
There will also be modifications to road junctions along Morphett Road and Diagonal Road located either side of the rail crossing which will improve traffic flows.
The Oaklands Crossing Grade Separation Project will also include:
- A new Oaklands Park Railway Station 160m long to cater for increased train lengths and to manage patronage growth on the Seaford Line
- Grade separation of the Marino Rocks Greenway pedestrian and cycling shared use path at Morphett Road
- Increased pedestrian accessibility along and across the rail corridor and to the train station
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Stephen Mullighan, said modern infrastructure is essential for growth and creating and sustaining jobs.
“South Australia is experiencing a once-in-a-generation infrastructure boom as we deliver the rail, roads, schools and hospitals our state needs,” Mr Mullighan said.
“We are ensuring that our record infrastructure investment provides new job opportunities for South Australians and maximises opportunities for South Australian businesses.
“By setting strict requirements for local content, and putting more apprentices and trainees into work, we’re making sure South Australians reap the benefits of our investments.”
