Australia’s Major Airport of the Year announced

A Tasmanian airport has been named Australia’s Major Airport of the Year for a third year in a row by the Australian Airports Association (AAA).

Launceston Airport is the first Australian airport to win the trifecta.

Launceston Airport General Manager, Paul Hodgen, said he was proud to be part of a team that is focused on delivering a great customer experience to passengers.

“I am thrilled that Launceston Airport has again been recognised for providing great customer experiences and quality operations, and it’s a testament to our staff and to the wider airport community,” said Mr Hodgen.

“We are focused on putting the traveller first and that is evident in our terminal upgrades, which include improved dining options, enhanced seating, free Wi-Fi, together with additional toilet and shower facilities in the check-in hall.

“What makes the airport special is that our investment and upgrades clearly reflect elements of our beautiful region.

“We serve more than 1.3 million travellers annually and make a real effort to create a sense of place at the airport for arriving visitors.”

In September 2017, Launceston Airport unveiled its terminal reconfiguration that transformed the layout of the building.

The transformation re-orientated the airport’s screening facility location, placing it immediately after check-in to allow travellers to take full advantage of the airport’s award-winning dining and shopping precinct prior to boarding.

Mr Hodgen said the recent terminal reconfiguration creates a smoother flow for passengers going through security; giving travellers more time to rest and relax, eliminating the anxiety and stress that is sometimes associated with travel.

“We have created an airport that Launceston can be truly proud of and now see ourselves as a brand champion for Tasmania, showcasing the character, products and produce that our wonderful state has to offer,” Mr Hodgen said.

“Airports are key drivers of regional economic prosperity, connecting communities and businesses with each other and the world.

“We are proud to act as the gateway to Launceston facilitating tourism and freight opportunities to Australia’s major cities.”

“If you’ve flown through Launceston Airport recently, you know the operation runs like a family, and on behalf of Launceston Airport, and our partners, I thank the Australian Airports Association for recognising our work and commitment to service and innovation.”

The Australian Airports Association is the industry body representing more than 300 airports and aerodromes around the nation.

The award considers airports achieving excellence across a number of areas including customer experience, operations, commercial, environmental management and community engagement.

Launceston Airport was also awarded a Silver Award in the Tasmanian Tourism Awards on 10 November 2017, adding to the Bronze and Gold awards it has attained in recent years.
