Eight winning projects across nine categories, and two outstanding individuals were honoured at the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s national awards ceremony.

Cantala by Icon Developments with SJB (VIC) won the Medium Density Development Award. Cantala is a residential development comprising 25 multi-storey townhouses and a block of 44 low-rise apartments. It has struck a beautiful balance between the best of contemporary place-making and the sought after aesthetics of leafy Melbourne suburbia.

One of Cantala’s most impressive features is the fact the entire development is walkable.

By freeing up ground level space usually given to vehicles, SJB could focus more on creating places for people.

This decision enabled the introduction of a series of connected paths and courtyards within the site.

The UDIA & Frasers Property Women in Leadership Award Winner was Nicola Smith from Niche Planning Studio (VIC). Ms Smith, Director of Niche Planning Studio, has an impressive track record of achievement in several Australian states, having started her own business in 2012 and growing the company to a team of ten with clients across three states.

Ms Smith leads a diverse team in terms of gender, age and cultural background, and her leadership style celebrates and draws on that diversity as a key contributor to the success of the business.

“Nicola has clear plans for the future of her own business involving even wider diversity and inclusion, and this combined with her extensive involvement over a number of years in a range of representative industry organisations and mentoring roles make her an outstanding winner of the 2018 Women in Leadership award,” UDIA National President, Darren Cooper, said.

Ms Smith also won the 2017 UDIA Victoria award in the same category.

Lendlease was been selected as the “best-of-the-best” following a trifecta win  including the coveted 2018 President’s Award for Barangaroo South.

According to the UDIA, the President’s Award means Barangaroo has been selected as the “best-of-the-best”.

UDIA National President, Darren Cooper, said, “Barangaroo South is not just a worthy winner because of its many innovations and areas of excellence across multiple categories; it’s for its excellence and innovation across every category imaginable.

“This project takes its rightful place as a city-transforming initiative which will be a  guiding light for its approaches to sustainability and innovation for generations to come.”

Barangaroo South also won the UDIA’s Environmental Excellence award, reflecting Lendlease’s commitment to developing next generation workplaces for people, tenants and investors.

In addition, development partners Lendlease and LandCorp shared the honors for Residential Development, winning the award for their joint Alkimos Beach residential development in Western Australia.

Better performing buildings, in environmental and social terms, deliver a number of benefits to investors and tenants, including more productive workplaces and precincts that generate greater value for all.

Upon completion, Barangaroo South will become home to around 2000 residents, a next-generation office space for 23,000 workers, and house more than 80 retail outlets. In addition, over 50 per cent of the precinct will be open public spaces for all to enjoy.

CEO Lendlease Property, Kylie Rampa, said, “Winning a trifecta of awards is testimony to the talent of our people across our business.

“The President’s and Environmental awards recognise Barangaroo South as a successful and dynamic precinct that helps confirm Sydney’s position as one of the world’s truly great cities.

“Big and complex projects don’t happen without involving thousands of people and working in close partnership with government.

“Barangaroo South has also provided a rare opportunity to explore and innovate with new products, systems and methodologies – from sustainability to safety, design to delivery.

“This includes important initiatives such as the Barangaroo Skills Exchange (BSX) which has seen more than 10,000 workers gain more than 20,000 accredited training outcomes.

“We are seeing more and more investment in sustainable assets like Barangaroo and Alkimos.”
