Sydney Airport will soon be faster and less painful to access, with the Sydney Gateway Project set to improve road and rail access to the airport and Port Botany area.

The project aims to give local roads back to the local community, ease congestion and make journeys to and from Sydney Airport easier, faster and safer.

Sydney Gateway will pass through Sydney Airport, land to the north of the airport, and create direct motorway access to the domestic and international terminal precincts.

In addition, the entrance to the domestic precinct will be significantly enhanced by a new dedicated flyover from Qantas Drive to the front door of the terminals.

The NSW Government and Sydney Airport will collaborate over the next three years to develop further ground transport projects for additional capacity and improved access to the airport precincts and the wider transport network.

With the NSW Government, Sydney Airport will also explore opportunities to invest the compensation it will receive back into other transport solutions for the airport including metro, rail and bus services.

Sydney Airport CEO, Geoff Culbert, said, “Sydney Gateway is a game changer for reducing congestion around the airport. Widening Qantas Drive to three lanes in each direction will substantially improve the experience for people travelling to, from and past the airport.

“It is exciting to think that soon you will be able to drive from Parramatta to the airport and back without passing through a single traffic light.

“For our surrounding local community, the delivery of Sydney Gateway will take cars and trucks off local roads. It will give local roads back to the local community, ease congestion and make journeys to and from Sydney Airport easier, faster and safer.

“Sydney Gateway will enhance the passenger experience, support the efficiency of our airline and freight operators and ease the commute for the 31,000 people that work at the airport. It also provides an opportunity for airport land to be better utilised with improved airside connections which will support growing passenger and freight operations.”

Sydney Airport is committed to improving access and easing ground transport congestion around the airport over the long term.

Sydney Gateway complements the considerable investment by the NSW and Australian Governments in the WestConnex project as well as the Australian Government’s investment in the Port Botany Rail Line.
