The Victorian Opposition has announced a $24 million Regional Aviation Infrastructure Fund for regional airport upgrades in the state, if it is elected to government.

The move was welcomed by the Australian Airports Association (AAA), with AAA Victorian Division Chair, Paul Ferguson, stating the election commitment recognised the importance of the regional aviation network to the state’s economy and community.

“A dedicated Regional Aviation Infrastructure Fund would provide a welcome boost for the people living and working in regional Victoria,” Mr Ferguson said.

“As airport infrastructure works typically have a lifespan of 20 years or so, the benefits of a fund such as this would be enduring and community shaping.”

The Liberals has committed to the investment over a four year period if elected to help upgrade regional airports as part of a plan to decentralise jobs and the population in Victoria.

Mr Ferguson said regional airports provided vital connection for communities, and a sustainable funding model was vital to ensure their long-term future.
