Epping and Chatswood upgrade complete

An upgrade to the suburban railway between Epping and Chatswood in Sydney has been completed to modern metro rail standards.

Customers using the metro stations at Macquarie Park, Macquarie University and North Ryde will have almost four times as many trains an hour than before as part of Sydney Metro.

Metro upgrade work between Epping and Chatswood included:

  • 28km of new train signal cabling installed along the 13kmsection of railway
  • Bringing the platforms and station infrastructure to metro railway standards, including the installation of 36 platform screen doors at each station
  • Paving and tiling work on the upgraded platforms
  • High voltage cabling installed in the tunnels and in power supply substations at Macquarie Park, Macquarie University, Delhi Road, Lady Game Drive and Chatswood North substations
  • Segregation fencing installed on the surface at Chatswood between the Sydney Metro and Sydney Trains lines, to ensure safety of train operations and track workers when the line opens.

Upgrading and converting the line to become part of Sydney’s new metro system was a major undertaking and a ‘project within a project’.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s most advanced railway: all stations are fully accessible with lifts at all stations and level access between platforms and trains, with no more step into a train.

Every Sydney Metro station also has glass safety screen doors along the edge of all platforms, keeping people and objects like prams away from the edge and allowing trains to get in and out of stations much faster. This technology is a first for Australia.

Station Link has been keeping customers moving in the lead up to Sydney Metro’s first service, with over 4.3 million trips taken on the new, fully-accessible fleet of pink buses (as at 13 May 2019).
