A new east-west transport link has been identified for the Greater Macarthur area, which would connect Appin Road, Gilead with Menangle Road at Menangle Park, to support community growth.
The Link Road has been earmarked following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including the community, to meet the demands of rapid population growth in the Greater Macarthur area.
The preferred road corridor was chosen from four shortlisted options following consideration of land use, environmental, traffic efficiency and safety factors, to ensure the best outcomes for the community.
It is believed this option would provide an efficient east-west link across the Greater Macarthur region, which will also enable active and public transport options.
The preferred option also supports protected koala corridors in the area.
The Link Road would join with stage one of the New South Wales Government’s Spring Farm Parkway at Menangle Park and together, would provide an essential connection between Appin Road and the Hume Motorway.
A future Stage two of the Spring Farm Parkway would complete the connection from Appin Road to Camden Bypass.
It is proposed the new link road would feature 3.8km of two-lane dual carriageway with intersections at Appin Road and Menangle Road.
A wide central median would allow for additional lanes if required in the future.
The new road would also feature retaining walls and a bridge over Glendower Street and has been chosen to minimise impacts on native vegetation.
The next stage of the project will involve the New South Wales Department of Transport collaborating with the Department of Planning and Environment to investigate options to preserve the Link Road corridor.
