2023 has been a tense year for the infrastructure sector, with major funding cuts, skill shortages and increasing costs of materials being some of the key pain points plaguing the industry throughout the year.

Nevertheless, the sector is building to meet the demands of the future, with the sector embracing new technologies, championing sustainability and increasing diversity.

The next year will be centred around recovery and growth, as major projects around Australia continue development, airports experience record passenger numbers, transportation networks open up to connect communities, and much more.

Here are the top stories for Infrastructure this year:

1. West Gate Tunnel reaches milestone

The Victorian Government has announced that tunnel boring is complete on the twin tunnels which form a key part of the West Gate Tunnel project.

2. Select VIC level crossing removals fast-tracked

The Victorian Government is set to ease congestion and cut travel times sooner, with level crossing removals ahead of schedule across Melbourne and works along the Melton, Sunbury and Frankston lines fast-tracked.

3. Inland Rail double-stacked trains take on new route

The Federal Government has announced that double-stacked trains will not travel through the City of Logan following an independent review of the Inland Rail project.

4. Historic NSW railway station to undergo accessibility upgrade

An historic railway station located at Dubbo, New South Wales, is set to receive an upgrade to deliver a safer, more accessible and modern facility for rail passengers.

5. Downer signs $4.6B train manufacturing contract

Downer Group has officially signed a $4.6 billion contract to design and manufacture trains for the State Government’s $7.1 billion Queensland Train Manufacturing Program.
