The Victorian Government has unveiled a new strategy designed to boost equality in the construction sector.

Building Equitable Futures Strategy 2024-32 identifies enduring actions to increase the number of women in trade, non-trade, and professional roles across the civil, commercial and industrial sectors which have historically been male dominated.

The strategy draws on global evidence of what works and is informed by the voices of the people who work in the construction industry and have the capacity to create change – building upon the success of our previous Women in Construction Strategy.

The Building Equitable Futures Strategy was developed by in consultation with employers, industry associations and unions, who have worked collaboratively on the strategy and its associated actions.

The Government’s Building Equality Policy complements the strategy by establishing targets for training and employment opportunities for women in the sector.

Victorian Minister for Industrial Relations, Tim Pallas, said, “Greater diversity and representation in our workplaces and industries makes them stronger and this strategy helps us to deliver just that.

“Workplace gender equity will only be achieved when everyone can access and enjoy equal rewards, resources, and opportunities.”

Victorian Minister for Women, Natalie Hutchins, said, “This Strategy builds on Victoria’s Gender Equality Strategy – Our Equal State by removing embedded cultural barriers that have historically prevented women from entering and staying in the construction industry.”

“Although gender equity cannot be achieved by the Victorian Government alone, we will lead by example and set standards for acceptable behaviour and model best practice. We understand and embrace our unique role and are committed to working cooperatively with all stakeholders.”
