Two new infrastructure projects in the Northern Territory will help unlock land for hundreds of new homes, with a $25 million investment from the Federal Government’s Housing Support Program.

The funding includes $14 million for enabling works in Alice Springs, paving the way for up to 120 social dwellings. Works will include installation of essential services like roads, power, water and sewerage infrastructure.

In Palmerston East, $11 million will go towards upgrading the connecting infrastructure in the Farrar West development, enabling the release of up to 290 residential lots. The area is zoned for mixed residential, commercial and community purposes.

“From Darwin to Alice Springs, we’re turbocharging housing supply by delivering the infrastructure Australia needs,” said Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Catherine King.

The latest funding follows a previous $7 million commitment to Katherine East under the same program, supporting infrastructure for up to 730 homes.

It forms part of the Federal Government’s broader $32 billion Home of Your Own plan, which aims to help deliver 1.2 million new homes across the country over five years.

Northern Territory Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Joshua Burgoyne welcomed the announcement, calling it “a significant and exciting investment into critical enabling infrastructure in both the Top End and Central Australia”.

“We have committed to rebuilding the Territory economy and commitments such as these are vital stepping stones to achieving that,” he said.

The $1.5 billion Housing Support Program provides funding to improve planning capability, deliver enabling infrastructure and support social housing.

Projects are funded via state-based agreements, with Implementation Plans developed jointly by the Commonwealth and states.
