$3.4 million Byford bridge completed

A new $3.4 million bridge over Beenyup Brook on the South Western Highway in Byford, Perth, has been completed, improving safety and freight haulage efficiency in the area.

Western Australian Minister for Transport, Bill Marmion, said the new bridge was a well-designed facility for all road users in the area, including local commuters and families, with particular benefits for the freight industry.

“South Western Highway is a dedicated heavy haulage route, however the old bridge had load weight restrictions requiring some vehicles to make long detours,” Mr Marmion said.

“The new structure has been designed to cater for all vehicles and will save time and money as it will accommodate larger vehicles moving freight across our vast state.

“Road user safety will be significantly improved, with the bridge being built in accordance with the latest safety standards.”

The project was jointly funded by the Australian and State Governments and provided jobs for up to 100 people at its peak.

Mr Marmion thanked the local community and road users for their support during the construction period.

“The new bridge is five metres wider than the former bridge and includes two lanes in each direction and sealed shoulders,” Mr Marmion said.

“The pedestrian path along the western side of the highway has also been widened to three metres.”
