$3.8M upgrade to busy Melbourne intersection

A major Melbourne intersection, located at  City Road and Power Street in Southbank has undergone a $3.8 million upgrade to enhance safety and traffic flow for both drivers and pedestrians.

The $3.8 million project, designed by expert engineers and road safety specialists, included widening the footpath and relocating the pedestrian crossing at the corner where vehicles turn left onto Power Street to create more space between pedestrians and vehicles.

Pedestrians now have a safer space while waiting to cross the road, and large trucks have a wider path to navigate the left turn from City Road onto Power Street.

These measures improve road user visibility and awareness, while the automated pedestrian crossing and sensors prevent crowding by triggering changes to the traffic lights to provide additional time for pedestrians to cross.

The left-turn lane along City Road has also been extended to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow between motorists turning into Power Street and those travelling straight.

The project was designed in close consultation with the City of Melbourne, the freight industry, and the local community following a crash in 2021 that injured five people, to deliver an upgrade that benefits all road users.

Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, visited the intersection of City Road and Power Street on 18 May 2023, which has been improved to boost safety and traffic flow for those travelling through the area.

Ms Horne said the Victorian Government has upgraded this major intersection in Southbank to make it safer for pedestrians and road users as they travel throughout the area.

“We know City Road and Power Street is an important connection for many – so this upgrade will provide a huge benefit, with a safer crossing for pedestrians and more turning space for vehicles,” Ms Horne said.

Member for Albert Park, Nina Taylor, thanked the community for their patience while the major upgrade was being delivered, which is all about improving safety for pedestrians and traffic flow through the intersection.
