A key stretch of Western Australia’s coastal road network is set to reopen, with major safety upgrades to Indian Ocean Drive now complete.

The $55 million project, jointly funded by the Federal and Western Australian governments, involved significant works along a 33-kilometre section between Leeman and Brand Highway.

The upgrades included full-width road widening, realignment of eight kilometres between Eneabba-Coolimba Road and Freshwater Bay, and the construction of two new overtaking lanes.

Originally closed in April 2024 to allow for construction, the route will officially reopen to traffic in time for the April school holidays.

The project is the latest in a series of upgrades aimed at improving safety on the busy regional route, which links Perth to coastal communities and the Mid West.

It follows the widening of 25 kilometres between Jurien Bay and Green Head last year, and the rollout of more than 200 kilometres of audible edge and centre lines under the Regional Road Safety Program.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the reopening would provide a safer and more efficient journey for residents, tourists and freight operators.

“The State Government is committed to improving regional road safety across Western Australia, and it’s fantastic this important upgrade will be completed in time for the April school holidays,” she said.

“This work will provide a safer link for local residents and a number of coastal communities north of Perth.

“I thank the local community for their patience during the extended closure period to allow for these important works to be carried out.”

The improvements are expected to significantly reduce the risk of serious crashes on a route that has seen increased traffic volumes in recent years due to growing tourism and regional development.
