Disaster recovery works are underway on the Bruxner Highway at Mallanganee, supported by a $9.5 million investment from the Federal and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The funding will support repairs to improve the long-term resilience of the highway and maintain access between towns and villages across northern NSW.
Transport for NSW will carry out works between Willock Street and Bulmers Road, about 40 kilometres west of Casino, where two downslopes were damaged in a landslip.
The project will include the installation of soil nails and micropiles drilled deep into the slope, along with upgrades to drains and culverts to improve stability and manage water flow.
Works are expected to take about six months to complete.
The funding has been provided through the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package to support ‘build back better’ recovery outcomes following recent severe weather events.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain, said the investment would strengthen a key regional transport corridor.
“This investment through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements will help ensure the Bruxner Highway continues to provide essential access between towns and villages across northern NSW,” McBain said.
“This work will help the highway better withstand future storms and flooding.”
NSW Minister for Recovery, Janelle Saffin, said the highway was a vital link for communities in the state’s north.
“The Bruxner Highway is a vital artery in northern NSW, connecting locals, freight and tourists from Ballina to Boggabilla,” Saffin said.
“This work is about strengthening the transport network so communities can recover faster and be better prepared for future events.”
