Australia’s most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been recognised through the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards 2025, held across every state and territory in September.

The annual awards shine a spotlight on the achievements of individual engineers and project teams who are shaping the nation’s future, while reinforcing the profession’s critical role in community, industry and environmental progress.

Engineers Australia Chief Executive Officer Romilly Madew AO said the awards reflect the breadth and impact of engineering.

“These awards are a celebration of what makes engineering exceptional. They recognise individuals and projects that challenge convention, drive innovation, and shape a better future,” Madew said.

“More than accolades, they offer a platform, one where our winners and finalists can champion the profession and inspire the next generation of engineers.”

With innovation, sustainability, engineering excellence and community benefit at their core, these project divisional winners now advance to the national stage.

State and Territory Project Award Winners

Western Australia – Boorloo Bridge, Causeway Link Alliance
Two striking curved cable-stayed bridges now span Perth’s Swan River, setting new Australian and world firsts in bridge engineering. With pioneering weathering steel, integrated LED lighting and a design that respects Country and community, Boorloo Bridge represents engineering excellence in sustainability and urban design.

Tasmania – Terminal 3 Marine and Dredge Works, Hazell Brady Joint Venture
This upgrade to East Devonport Port marks the first major wharf renewal in 30 years. By delivering a new berth, wharf structure and dredge works, the project unlocks long-term trade and tourism growth, ensuring Tasmania’s infrastructure meets the demands of the next half-century.

South Australia – Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre, Tonkin
Designed to withstand bushfire and climate challenges, the new visitor centre is both resilient and ecologically sustainable. It supports conservation and research while providing an inclusive public space that connects community and environment.

Queensland – Kangaroo Point Bridge, WSP Australia and BESIX Watpac
This 460-metre asymmetric cable-stayed bridge links Brisbane CBD with Kangaroo Point. Reducing congestion and car trips, it integrates solar power, flood resilience and public amenities, demonstrating world-class sustainability and design excellence.

Australian Capital Territory – CSIRO National Collections Building, TTW
Home to more than 14 million specimens, this facility sets a global benchmark for biodiversity research. Its purpose-built laboratories, façade innovation and landscape integration enable collaboration and conservation at scale.

Northern Territory – HMAS Coonawarra, McConnell Dowell
Built to withstand Darwin’s cyclonic conditions, this 250-metre wharf and jetties bolster Defence marine capability. High Indigenous engagement, innovative construction methods and a 100-year design life cement its long-term value.

Newcastle – SENSE 600®, InfraBuild with Monash University and UNSW
This sustainable high-strength steel rebar reduces embodied carbon in construction. By enabling lower emissions without changing existing design processes, it offers a practical pathway to greener infrastructure.

Victoria – Renewable Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generator Pilot, Energys Australia
Australia’s first commercial rollout of hydrogen fuel cell generators at remote telecommunications sites eliminates diesel dependence. The project demonstrates innovation in clean energy integration and reliable off-grid power.

Sydney – Sydney Metro City Line, Sydney Metro
A transformative infrastructure project, the City Line delivers six new stations, unlocking connectivity greater than the Harbour Bridge and Tunnel combined. It redefines urban mobility and reshapes Sydney’s future.

Looking ahead

These nine national project finalists will now compete for top honours at the national awards gala dinner at Doltone House, Sydney, on 13 November.
