A South Australian civil engineering and landscape architecture firm has won the contract to undertake road design work  in South Australia’s Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

Greenhill Australia was awarded the $780,000 contract to design nearly 150km of the main access road between Kaltjiti (Fregon) and Iwantja (Indulkana) including the Mimili Airstrip access road.

The contract forms part of a $106.25 million joint Commonwealth and State government project to upgrade around  210km of roads in the APY Lands over a period of five years.

South Australian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Stephen Mullighan said, “The APY Lands Main Access Road upgrade is an important project which aims to improve living standards of the local Anangu people by improving access to essential services and facilities.

“It will also help to reduce travel times for people in this very remote region while also reducing the cost of operating vehicles by reducing wear and tear.”

Mr Mullighan said the road is currently unsealed and un-sheeted, as well as prone to flooding due to being below the natural surface level.

“The new design will provide for a road surface, which will improve ride quality, safety and accessibility for road users,” Mr Mullighan said.

The design work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2016 with the full project scheduled for completion in June 2019.
