The Victorian Government has awarded the contract for the architectural design for the Swan Street Bridge in Melbourne.
BKK Architects has won the contract to redesign the Melbourne icon, taking inspiration from landmarks including the Arts Centre and rowers that make their way down the Yarra River.
Minister for Roads and Safety Luke Donnellan said,“This design will give Swan Street Bridge a modern makeover without losing its existing charm.”
The $30 million bridge upgrade will include adding an additional traffic lane, and new separated and shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides.
BMD, Cut and Fill, and Seymour Whyte have been shortlisted to submit tenders for the upgrade with the contract due to be awarded by the end of 2016 and construction starting in mid 2017.
Swan Street Bridge links the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Shrine of Remembrance with Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, Hisense Arena and the MCG.
In early 2016,the Labor Government asked the community to help shape the future of the bridge.
“We’ve heard from the community about how they want the bridge to look and feel and we’re now getting on with creating a world class bridge for a world class city,” Mr Donnellan said.
The feedback highlighted the important role the bridge continues to play in Melbourne’s sporting and cultural way of life and the need to address traffic congestion and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the bridge.
Once completed, the upgrade will reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and provide greater access to the sports and entertainment precinct.
