Ashley Drive duplication nears completion

The duplication of Ashley Drive between Erindale Drive and Johnson Drive in Canberra is expected to be completed by early 2018.

Director of Capital Works and Development Support at Transport Canberra and City Services, Ben McHugh, said the duplication of Ashley Drive has been underway for just over 12 months and a number of key milestones have been reached in that time, including the first stage of the traffic switch, which is now complete.

“The noise walls and works on the underground services have been completed and new infrastructure, including the Statton Street and Bugden Avenue underpasses and Monks Creek Bridge, has been constructed,” Mr McHugh said.

“Installation of streetlights and traffic lights is also nearing completion and today’s traffic switch will allow works to be undertaken on the median including completion of the stormwater, and construction of traffic and pedestrian islands.

“This upgrade to Ashley Drive will significantly increase the capacity of the road and improve access for Theodore, Calwell and Lanyon residents connecting to the northern areas of the Tuggeranong Valley and Woden Valley through to the city centre.”

The completed first stage of the traffic switch has moved southbound traffic between Isabella Drive and Johnson Drive onto the new road.

This will give access to the construction team to complete their works in the median.

Milestones the project has to look forward to include:

  • Southbound traffic switch from Erindale Drive to Isabella Drive – December 2017
  • Traffic lights operational – planned for February 2018
  • Project completion – planned for March 2018

“Ashley Drive is Tuggeranong’s largest road and transport infrastructure project underway at the moment and we are working to deliver it as quickly as possible,” Mr McHugh said.
