International infrastructure engineering software company, Bentley Systems, has announced the finalists for its 2023 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure, which includes several projects from Australia and New Zealand.
The annual awards program honours the extraordinary work of Bentley software users advancing infrastructure design, construction, and operations throughout the world. Twelve independent jury panels, representing 12 award categories, selected the 36 finalists from over 300 nominations submitted by 235 organisations from 51 countries.
Representatives from the finalists’ organisations will present their projects to a panel of independent judges to determine the winners and meet with global press and industry executives at the 2023 Year in Infrastructure and Going Digital Awards event, which will be held at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, 11-12 October 2023.

Southern Program Alliance
WSP Australia Pty Ltd. – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
The Parkdale level crossing removal project involved a narrow rail corridor near heritage sites. Design consultant WSP needed an integrated digital solution and leveraged Bentley’s open modelling applications to establish a digital twin and meet project objectives. They reduced bridge materials by 7 per cent and the carbon footprint by 30 per cent.

SEPA Surrey Hills Level Crossing Removal Project
Laing O’Rourke – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
The Surrey Hills Level Crossing Removal Project is expected to improve safety, limit congestion, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To overcome the complexity, scale, and stringent timeline, the team selected SYNCHRO to create a detailed 4D model, visualising the entire construction program and reducing the risk of clashes by 75 per cent and scheduling errors by 40 per cent.

Port Authority of New South Wales: A Case Study in Digital Transformation

The Port Authority sought to create a digital representation of their physical assets. To accommodate the voluminous, multi sourced data and ensure they retained accurate, high-fidelity engineering information, they established a connected utility network and single source of truth. Bentley technology streamlined workflows and reduced travel between ports, optimising collaboration and accurate data sharing.

Validation of Digital Management Tools for OceanaGold’s Waihi Tailings Storage Facility
OceanaGold – Waihi, Waikato, New Zealand
OceanaGold wanted to validate the use of digital applications for safer, more effective management of their Waihi Tailings Storage Facility. They selected Bentley and Seequent applications to develop 3D geological and geotechnical models and a digital twin. Combining data within the digital twin provides better understanding of the safety of the physical asset, optimising prediction and preventive capabilities.
