Airport Councils International (ACI) Asia-Pacific has awarded two Australian airports Platinum and Gold status for their sustainability initiatives.

The results from the Green Airports Recognition 2019 awarded Adelaide Airport Platinum status and Sydney Airport Gold status in their respective passenger categories.

Adelaide Airport topped the under 10 million passengers per annum category for the second consecutive year.

The commendation recognises Adelaide Airport’s SMART building analytics initiative, aimed at improving building energy efficiency.

The airport was awarded Platinum in 2018 for its waste program and Gold in 2017 for its energy management program.

Sydney Airport achieved a Gold status in the 10 to 45 million passengers per annum category.

The Green Airports Recognition was established by ACI Asia-Pacific with the support of ACI AsiaPacific Regional Environment Committee.

The Recognition’s objective is to promote environmental best practices to minimise aviation’s impact on the environment and to recognise ACI Asia-Pacific airport members who have outstanding accomplishments in their environmental projects.

The theme for recognition in 2019 was ‘Green Airport Infrastructure’.

Adelaide Airport Managing Director, Mark Young, said Adelaide Airport strives to be a leader in sustainability and always works hard to embed the principles of sustainable business practice throughout its operations to minimise its impact on the environment and create value for its stakeholders.

“We signed a $50 million seven-year Sustainability Performance Linked Loan with ANZ, the first loan in Australia that incentivises a borrower to continually improve its performance against a set of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria last year,” Mr Young said.

“We also ranked number one airport in the world for the second year running in the 2018 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.

“We aim to be a top tier airport in our region, and our sustainability initiatives are a key part of that.”
