Australian-first continuous flow intersection upgrade

In an Australian-first, the Queensland  Government is creating a continuous flow intersection in Bundall where right-turning traffic and through-traffic will be able to move through the intersection at the same time.

The upgrade at the Southport-Burleigh road and Salerno Street intersection in the Gold Coast will also help to remove congestion in the area.

Queensland Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said, “The Southport-Burleigh Road and Salerno Street intersection is one of the Gold Coast’s most congested intersections.

“This upgrade will increase the number of vehicles that can make it through the intersection in a single signal cycle and ensure the intersection flows more freely.

“This innovative project is designed to tackle congestion and deliver the most cost effective solution for Gold Coast motorists.”

The Queensland  Government has also launched the first information campaign surrounding the continuous flow intersection with an instructional video.

“Traditional intersections have right-turning traffic in the middle of the road – through-traffic moving in the opposite direction must wait for those vehicles to turn and the light to turn green,” Mr Bailey said.

“The continuous flow intersection shifts right-turning traffic to the outside edges of the road, allowing through-traffic and turning traffic to move simultaneously.

“It will allow a northbound right-turn from Southport-Burleigh Road (Bundall Road) into Salerno Street.”

Mr Bailey said the launch of the video on how to navigate the new intersection would be the first step in a significant education campaign for motorists.

“Being the first intersection of its kind in the country, we need to ensure as many motorists as possible are familiar with the intersection layout at the end of construction, as well as how to navigate it,” Mr Bailey said.

“We encourage everyone to head to the Transport and Main Roads website to view the video so they can have any enquiries answered before works begin.”

Mr Bailey said the project was part of the Palaszczuk Government’s  $160 million Commonwealth Games roads package.

“Works on the final stage of the Southport-Burleigh Road upgrade are expected to start in October and will be completed in mid-2017 to ensure we are prepared for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Bailey said.

“An average of 112 jobs will be created over the life of the project, which is great news for the Gold Coast.”
