The Federal Government has hosted an Industry Roundtable, attended by representatives from various sectors of the aviation industry, to discuss the establishment and objectives of the country’s first Jet Zero-style Council.

The meeting is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to collaborate with the industry to achieve a sustainable aviation sector that supports emission reduction targets en route to net zero by 2050.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said the Federal Government understands just how critical Australian aviation is to our way of life, as it connects families, friends and communities with each other, links businesses to markets, and underpins economically vital industries such as tourism.

“Aviation accounted for about nine per cent of Australia’s transport emissions and 1.6 per cent of total emissions in 2018-19,” Ms King said.

“Because aviation is critical it needs to be part of the low emissions future and that’s why we are working in partnership with the industry.”

The Jet Zero-style Council’s work will complement the Aviation White Paper, which will set the scene for the next generation of growth and development across the aviation sector.

One of the paper’s priority areas is how to maximise the aviation sector’s contribution to achieving net zero carbon emissions, including through sustainable aviation fuel and emerging technologies.Initial consultation has already started for the White Paper. Interested individuals and organisations can make submissions here about any aspect of the Terms of Reference by 10 March 2023.
