Australia’s first airport gigabit precinct is underway at Brisbane Airport (BNE) with 250km of new state of the art full fibre infrastructure is being installed to allow existing and new business tenants access to ultra-fast internet connectivity.
The gigabit network, created with a mixture of multi-mode and single-mode fibre, spans across the commercial, industrial and retail precinct at BNE, providing the technology backbone for future smart city concepts.
Being in the unique position of being located around eight kilometres from the city with approximately 600 hectares of land available for future development, and now offering gigabit capability, Brisbane Airport has positioned itself as a prime location for sophisticated technology companies to set up their business.
Julieanne Alroe, Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) CEO and Managing Director, said high speed infrastructure is a fundamental requirement in today’s digital economy.
“Over the last decade we have invested heavily in fibre, meticulously crafting the right technology that is resilient, future proof and goes right to our boundaries. It’s about constructing an environment that is absolutely essential for businesses going in to the future,” Ms Alroe said.
“The fibre network, combined with an industry grade data centre and internet exchange already on-site, means Brisbane Airport is capable of offering business tenants 1000 Mbps upload/download speed, compared to best case NBN connection of up to 100 Mbps”
“With gigabit connection available on-site right now, we are paving the way to Brisbane Airport becoming a key technology hub and high speed gateway to the internet from, a capability.”
Currently around 480 businesses are located at BNE, servicing a diverse range of industries offering services such as freight and aircraft handling, warehousing, transport and communications, manufacturing, research, property and infrastructure development, education and training, recreation, tourism, accommodation, leisure and retail.
Collectively these businesses employ more than 23,000 people, a number expected to exceed 50,000 by 2029.
In 2020, Brisbane’s new runway will open, effectively doubling the city’s aviation capacity and positioning Brisbane as the future major gateway to Australia, as other major Australian capital ports are reaching maximum capacity.
