Works on the extension of Roystonea Avenue between Lambrick and Owston avenues in Palmerston, Northern Territory, have been completed.
Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Nicole Manison, said the project was fully funded by the territory government through the Palmerston Road Upgrades Program, and this and other current improve vehicle movement and safety for all road users.
This $6.4 million project included:
- Construction of intersections at Belyuen Road and the Southern Connector Road
- Construction of a shared user path along the new section of Roystonea Avenue
- Installation and improvements to street lighting and landscaping
- Protection of essential services
“Both Owston and Roystonea avenues are feeder roads. This project will remove pressure from the smaller suburban roads and decrease the number of vehicles through the residential areas,” Ms Manison said.
Projects that are due for completion in the coming months include:
- The construction of a third outbound lane on Roystonea Avenue from the Tiger Brennan Drive Overpass to Temple Terrace
- The Roystonea Avenue to Terry Drive duplication project, including increased capacity at the traffic signals at Temple Terrace
- The duplication of Temple Terrace between Roystonea Avenue and the Stuart Highway
“Palmerston is one of the nation’s fastest growing cities and its road network needs to keep pace with its rapid development and the overall growth of the greater Darwin area,” Ms Manison said.
“We expect increased traffic on the Palmerston road network through major developments such as the Gateway Project, the new Palmerston Regional Hospital and ongoing land release in Johnston and Zuccoli.”
Ms Manison said the project was undertaken by a local contractor and provided jobs for more than 70 workers, including 25 Indigenous employees and six apprentices.
