Major construction is ramping up on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade in Altona Meadows, with a temporary closure of the Point Cook Road bridge allowing crews to deliver the next stage of works.

The bridge will be closed to vehicles in both directions from 10pm on Sunday, 28 June until mid-September, enabling construction beneath and around the structure as part of the intersection upgrade.

During the closure, crews will widen Point Cook Road approaching the future signalised intersection, construct the new outbound Princes Freeway exit loop ramp beneath the bridge, and complete major earthworks and structural works supporting the upgraded intersection.

Big Build Roads Program Director, Dipal Sorathia, said the works would mark a significant milestone for the project.

“We’re starting works that will get us to a major milestone, with crews soon delivering the core works that will bring the new outbound freeway exit ramp and upgraded intersection to life,” Sorathia said.

“We thank the community for their patience while we carry out these works safely and efficiently to deliver a better, more reliable connection for local road users.”

Pedestrian and cyclist access across the bridge will be maintained throughout construction, while clearly signed detours will be in place for motorists.

Once complete, the project will replace the existing roundabout with traffic signals, construct a new outbound freeway exit ramp connected via a loop road, widen Point Cook Road and Central Avenue through the intersection, and deliver new pedestrian crossings and improved walking and cycling connections.

The upgrade is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion and provide more reliable access to the Princes Freeway, Aircraft Station and surrounding businesses.
