The Kemp Street bridge in Junee has officially closed, marking the beginning of a major infrastructure upgrade expected to take around 18 months to complete.
The closure is part of the Inland Rail project, which involves replacing the existing bridge with a new, higher structure to accommodate double-stacked freight trains. The upgrade is essential to ensure trains can pass safely under the bridge, aligning with the broader goals of increasing freight efficiency between Melbourne and Brisbane.
The closure affects the Kemp Street bridge between Seignior and Ducker Streets, as well as Edgar Street between George and Hill Streets. Several surrounding roads will remain open for local access only, including sections of Railway Lane, George Street, and Edgar Street.
Inland Rail says the new bridge will not only support improved rail freight capacity but also enhance long-term connectivity and road safety in the region.
To minimise disruption, a free community shuttle service is operating daily, connecting residents on both sides of the rail line. The shuttle uses a “hail and ride” model and is designed to assist school students, elderly residents, and those with mobility needs. Timetables vary by day, with peak services running every 30 minutes and off-peak services hourly.
Taxi vouchers are also available for those who require travel outside shuttle hours, with priority given to residents who are transport-dependent or have special circumstances.
School buses will continue with rerouted paths, and a dedicated student shuttle service has been introduced during school start and finish times.
