International Olympic Committee members have voted for Brisbane to host the XXXV Olympic Games in 2032, set to deliver $8 billion worth of economic and social benefits across the state.
Brisbane will be the third Australian city to host after Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000).
The below video showcases the Brisbane 2032 Master Plan which features events being hosted across greater Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Townsville and Cairns.
The Master Plan has been developed by Games partners including the state, federal and local governments.
Research by KPMG predicts that hosting the 2032 Games will deliver $8.1 billion in benefits to Queensland including a $4.6 billion economic boost to tourism and trade and $3.5 billion in social improvements such as health, volunteering and community benefits.
The 2032 Games are also expected to support 91,600 full-time equivalent jobs in Queensland and 122,900 nationally.
The IOC ‘new norm’ policy means the Games will fit around Queensland, as 84 per cent of venues are already built or will be temporary.
Some current venues like the Gabba will be refurbished to serve Queenslanders for generations to come while any new infrastructure will have long lasting community benefits.
The global audience reach for the Games will be huge – about four times that of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Australian Constructors Association CEO, Jon Davies, welcomed the announcement, saying that the Olympics provides an incredible opportunity for the Queensland Government to showcase innovation and leave a skills legacy.
“This is the longest run up that any host nation has had to deliver the Olympic Games and we must not waste this opportunity,” Mr Davies said.
“Queensland will be the first host nation to deliver an Olympic Games within budget if it engages early with industry to get the planning right.
“We need to plan the right infrastructure and appropriately stage it so we can efficiently deliver the project pipeline.”
Mr Davies said the opportunity is not just about delivering the Olympic Games to time and cost.
“The Olympics really gives us the chance to think big and to create a new legacy that will build Queensland’s workforce capability and capacity and innovation,” Mr Davies said.
“Let’s set skills legacy targets and unleash innovation so we not only deliver high quality infrastructure but set the construction industry on a more sustainable path.
“To realise this opportunity all levels of government need to work together with industry.”
The Australian Constructors Association believes now is the critical time to move forward with the South East Queensland City Deal.
“Now is the time to get the planning right and secure agreement from all levels of government on a forward pipeline of projects that will provide greater certainty for investment,” Mr Davies said.
“With transport infrastructure a key consideration for hosting the Olympic Games, the Games could be a catalyst for the development of visionary infrastructure such as Faster Rail.”
