Campbelltown Road upgrade to cater for housing boom

The $76 million upgrade for Campbelltown Road between East Town Centre Road and the new MacDonald Road in the Macarthur region has begun.

Work will include upgrading Campbelltown Road from a mainly two-to four-lane divided road with a central median strip, installation of three sets of traffic lights, an off-road shared pedestrian and cyclist path, as well as building designated turning lanes and bicycle and pedestrian crossing provisions at traffic lights.

Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts, said the NSW Government-funded upgrade was speeding up the delivery of new homes and better roads for the Macarthur region.

“The funding will enable more lanes to be built on Campbelltown Road to cater for the new community at Edmondson Park and thousands of future homes expected there,” Mr Roberts said.

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey, said the start of work on this upgrade was another step towards building better connections for the growing Campbelltown and Macarthur communities.

“As more land for housing is released, the NSW Government needs to ensure all roads and public transport can provide connectivity for these new communities,” Ms Pavey said.

“Access and travel times for road freight which travels through south west Sydney will be improved, as well as safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.”

Funding has been provided as part of the Housing Acceleration Fund, established in 2012, which has set aside more than $1.4 billion for projects to fund infrastructure, such as roads, transport, water, and electricity, to accelerate housing supply. Landcom has also contributed $22 million to the Campbelltown Road upgrade.

Major work on the first stage of the upgrade between East Town Centre Road and the new Macdonald Road intersection at Edmondson Park should be completed by the end of 2020.
