Canberra’s $1.13 million project road upgrade

Construction has begun on a $1.13 million project to upgrade the busy Pialligo Avenue and Scherger Drive intersection in Pialligo, Canberra, to improve traffic flow to the city during peak periods.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, said the project will boost Pialligo Avenue’s capacity as a key link between Canberra and Queanbeyan.

“The upgrade is being fully funded by the Australian Government and will reduce queuing at the intersection, and improve the safety and capacity of Pialligo Avenue,” Mr Chester said.

“It will also cater to the growth in commercial development in the area which has increased traffic volumes in recent years.”

Senator for the Australian Capital Territory, Zed Seselja, said an additional lane will be built on the city-bound approach to the Pialligo Avenue and Scherger Drive intersection, allowing motorists to bypass the traffic lights.

“The extra lane means drivers will be able to bypass the traffic lights at the intersection, and it is really pleasing to see work underway with the construction contractor Complex Civil Pty Ltd setting up on site. The works are expected to be completed by mid-2017, weather permitting,” Mr Seselja said.

ACT Minister for Transport Canberra and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris, said  the works follow the upgrade of the Pialligo Avenue and Oaks Estate intersection, completed in mid-2016, where new traffic lights were installed at the intersection to enhance safety by allowing traffic from Oaks Estate Road to more easily access Pialligo Avenue.

“This upgraded intersection will help traffic flow more smoothly and make the intersection safer for all road users,” Ms Fitzharris said.
