The City of Melbourne has launched its Climate Change Mitigation Strategy to 2050, outlining actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the impacts of a changing climate.
The strategy lays out its next steps in achieving its science-based targets and reducing the municipality’s largest sources of emissions and transitioning to 100 per cent renewable energy.
City of Melbourne has identified four priority actions for achieving its emissions reduction targets:
- 100 per cent renewable energy
- Zero emissions buildings and precincts
- Zero emissions transport
- Reducing the impact of waste
To implement the strategy, the City of Melbourne will:
- Integrate climate adaptation and mitigation
- Deliver environmental, social and economic benefits to the community
- Support innovation, knowledge sharing and transparency
Aligning itself with the Paris Agreement on climate change, the strategy forms part of the City’s commitment to international efforts to stay below a 1.5⁰C rise in global average temperatures.
The City developed the strategy through consultation with climate change experts and the Melbourne community throughout 2018.
The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) welcomed the launch of the strategy.
The Council said the proposed actions aligned with the recommendations of its Low Carbon, High Performance report – advancing innovation, incentives, and advocacy to delivery zero buildings and precincts.
The Council said it was especially thrilled to see the City’s proposal to “partner with industry to advocate for higher energy performance standards in the National Construction Code” and fully welcomed the support in advancing the recommendations in Built to Perform.
