The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has appointed Shane Carmody as its new  Acting CEO and Director of Aviation Safety (DAS), until a permanent CEO is selected.

Mr Carmody’s appointment follows the resignation of current CEO Mark Skidmore on 26 August 2016. Mr Skidmore will continue as CEO and DAS until October 2016 to allow for a smooth hand-over to Mr Carmody.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Chairman Jeff Boyd said, “Mr Carmody brings a wealth of aviation experience and knowledge to the role and will provide the appropriate leadership and stability as CASA continues to deliver the organisational transformation program.

“Mr Carmody joins CASA at a time when the organisation has undergone a period of significant change with the major restructure of the organisation and a renewed focus on stakeholder engagement and collaboration to deliver improved aviation safety outcomes.

“A number of improvements including the development and implementation of CASA’s new regulatory philosophy and just culture throughout the organisation will continue to be delivered.”

Mr Carmody is currently a Deputy Secretary at the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development where he leads the key portfolio areas of Aviation and Airports, Office of Transport Security, the Western Sydney Unit and Local Government and Territories.

Mr Carmody previously worked at CASA from October 2006 to May 2009 in the role of Deputy CEO Strategy and Support. He has had an extensive career in the public service including a number of executive positions in Veterans Affairs and Defence.

The domestic and international recruitment process to select a new CEO is now underway.
