Construction has commenced on a new $60 million manufacturing facility in Truganina, Melbourne, aimed at strengthening supply to Australia’s growing construction and infrastructure sectors.
The project is being undertaken by global building materials company, Mapei, which said the new plant marks a significant expansion of its Australian footprint, where it has operated for more than 30 years.
Mapei CEOs, Veronica Squinzi and Marco Squinzi, said the investment comes at a key time for the Victorian construction sector.
“Mapei has been actively present in the Australian construction industry for more than 30 years and expanding our footprint into Melbourne marks an important milestone for the business,” they said.
“With the state’s construction sector focused on delivering high-quality infrastructure for future generations, we’re proud that our local plant will provide our partners with industry-leading materials at a pivotal time for the sector.”
Set to open in 2026, the facility will supply high-performance construction materials to projects across metropolitan and regional Victoria, including major works such as the Suburban Rail Loop and North East Link.
The development aligns with Victoria’s long-term infrastructure pipeline, with more than 180 major road and rail projects planned through to 2051.
Mapei Australia General Manager, Marco De Santis, said the plant would enhance local manufacturing capability and improve project delivery outcomes.
“This new facility is more than just a factory; it reflects Mapei’s commitment to growth and innovation in this market, as well as our long-term focus on supporting Australia’s construction industry,” De Santis said.
“By increasing our local manufacturing capabilities, we aim to enable faster delivery, lower transport emissions, and improved support for the evolving needs of our customers and partners delivering critical infrastructure projects.”
The investment comes amid ongoing challenges across the construction sector, including supply chain disruptions, material shortages and workforce constraints, as demand continues to grow across Australia’s infrastructure pipeline.
In Victoria, recent budget commitments have reinforced the role of infrastructure investment in supporting economic growth and liveability outcomes.
Construction of the Truganina facility is underway, with commissioning, recruitment and training activities already in progress ahead of its planned opening in 2026.
