Construction tenders have opened for a new $90 million Mental Health Precinct in Northern Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Government plans to build the purpose-built facility opposite the Launceston General Hospital at 52 Frankland Street, Launceston, as part of Stage Two of the hospital’s broader masterplan.
Tasmanian Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the project forms part of the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s mental health system.
“The Northern Mental Health Precinct will provide a contemporary, home-like environment for immediate support, brief interventions, education and assistance navigating services,” Archer said.
The precinct will include a 30-bed mental health inpatient unit replacing the existing Northside Unit, as well as a Recovery College and a Safe Haven.
Dedicated parking for staff and health consumers will also be provided, and the precinct will be connected to the Launceston General Hospital via a pedestrian link bridge.
Archer said the project is designed to improve access to mental health care while reducing pressure on emergency departments.
“The precinct places people at the centre of care, enabling more timely access to services and helping reduce avoidable Emergency Department presentations,” she said.
Site preparation works began in August 2025 with demolition of the former Viewpoint buildings. A development application for the project was submitted to the City of Launceston in November 2025.
Subject to approvals and the appointment of a construction contractor, construction is expected to begin later this year.
