Port Phillip Council has invested $6.3 million into the development of a park located in Fishermans Bend’s Montague Precinct in Melbourne.

reszm001_final_no_logoBulldozers have started transforming a former industrial office into an urban oasis for the growing Fishermans Bend community.

Port Phillip Council is proud to be partnering with the Victorian Government to provide this crucial open space for Australia’s biggest urban renewal project.

Mayor, Bernadene Voss said, “We are excited that the demolition works underway are paving the way for the first new park for Fishermans Bend.

“This is great news for community members of all ages who will be able to come here to relax under a tree, kick a ball or meet friends for a chat.”

Ms Voss said the significant investment reflects the importance the Council places on building healthy and connected communities.

“Open space is vital for Fishermans Bend as access to nature promotes health and well-being, particularly for apartment dwellers who don’t have backyards,” Ms Voss said.

The Council’s concept design for the park includes a paved entrance area, featuring landscaping and artwork.

Terraced areas will provide spaces for people to relax under shady trees or run around.

Under the staged development, the Council will plan other facilities for the park in consultation with the Montague community and South Melbourne Ferrars Street Primary School. These could include a playground and outdoor fitness equipment.

Ms Voss said the Council is keen for the yet to be decided official name for the park to hold local significance.

The park is part of the Council’s integrated approach to the Ferrars Street and Community Precinct. The Council funded community facilities inside the new school will include a long day care kindergarten, which has already attracted strong interest from parents, and maternal child health and community services consulting rooms.

“The progressing park is just the start of the good news we are looking forward to for Fishermans Bend. We are keen to build on this successful partnership and deliver more places and spaces for the Fishermans Bend community with the Victorian Government,” Ms Voss said.

“We all want Fishermans Bend to be a great place to live, work and visit and the early delivery of infrastructure will help get this growing new community off to the best possible start.”
