A $4.2 million contract has been awarded to build dedicated bike lanes on two Gold Coast Bridges in Queensland to improve safety for all road users.
Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety, Mark Bailey, said Georgiou Group will build the dedicated lanes, with the project expected to take three months to complete.
Mr Bailey said the cycle lane upgrades on Southport–Burleigh Road (Bermuda Street section) are part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to the Principal Cycle Network.
“Cyclists are currently competing with motorists for space while crossing Lake Intrepid and Lake Orr bridges,” Mr Bailey said.
“The speed limit is 80km/h per hour and these upgrades, which will create a dedicated cycle lane across both bridges, will allow cyclists to ride in safety.
“Works are expected to begin later this month and include the widening of the bridges in the southbound direction.
“The road shoulders will also be widened to align with the bridges.
“We are building the safest environment possible for cyclists and motorists, while improving connectivity to the remainder of the Principal Cycling Network on Southport–Burleigh Road.”
