The NSW Government has appointed Seymour Whyte to deliver a new crossing at Mitchells Causeway, clearing the way for major construction to begin in July and the reopening of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass in the second quarter of 2027.
The project follows extensive geotechnical investigations, which confirmed stable bedrock beneath the existing causeway and enabled engineers to develop a long-term solution that builds on the existing crossing rather than replacing it entirely.
The new structure will be supported by deep piles anchored into bedrock, while the historic convict-built causeway will be stabilised as part of the works.
The crossing has also been designed to accommodate a future additional traffic lane, improving the route’s long-term capacity and resilience.
Construction will include drilling, grouting and piling works to establish the foundations for the new bridge structure.
The NSW Government has also announced a further $20 million support package for businesses affected by the highway closure. The funding will increase grants for businesses in the hardest-hit communities to up to $25,000 and extend financial assistance to eligible businesses in Lithgow, Oberon and Blackheath.
NSW Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison, said the project would deliver a permanent solution for the critical transport corridor.
“The NSW Government will not apply a band-aid fix,” Aitchison said.
“We are building a new crossing designed to serve local communities and freight for the next 100 years because this community deserves a permanent solution, not a temporary fix.”
Transport for NSW will continue upgrading detour routes and maintaining additional public transport services while construction is underway.
