The $12.5 million Cunningham Highway safety upgrade at Warrill View, Queensland, has been completed, providing a safer road surface and easier commute for motorists.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, said the Cunningham Highway was one of Queensland’s key freight routes, with heavy vehicles representing about 30 per cent of the traffic using the route each day.
“The Cunningham Highway links the urban areas of south east Queensland to southern freight markets, and is a major freight route to and from regional communities in New South Wales and south-west Queensland, particularly for agricultural produce,” Mr Chester said.
Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports, Mark Bailey, welcomed the completion of the vital upgrades, and said they would greatly benefit the roughly 5,000 motorists travelling the section of highway daily.
“This project involved upgrading three kilometres of the Cunningham Highway with a combination of new road pavement and repairs to the existing pavement, and installing guardrails, line marking and signage. This will help keep highway users safer into the future,” Mr Bailey said.
Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz, said the works south of Warrill View had also improved flood immunity on this section of the Cunningham Highway.
“The highway was subjected to heavy rainfall in December 2010 and January 2011, resulting in significant flooding and road damage at numerous locations,” Mr Buchholz said.
“Investing in these repair works has made this section of the highway safer for all drivers, and more efficient for the heavy vehicle operators who use it on a regular basis.”
The Australian Government contributed $10 million and the Queensland Government $2.5 million to fund the Warrill View works.
