The Northern Territory Government has sent a delegation to Singapore over two days where best practice green innovation and heat mitigation projects will be investigated to aid its planned city centre redevelopment.
NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner will head the delegation, aiming to incorporate some of the world’s best examples of urban, green architecture into the government’s $100 million CBD revitalisation to transform the NT capital into a first-rate tourist and cultural destination and create thousands of jobs for Territorians.
“The Territory Labor Government has invested $100 million to transform Darwin into one of the great tropical cities of the world, making it more liveable and a world-class tourist and cultural destination,” Mr Gunner said.
“It was made very clear at the economic summits that the time to enliven and reinvigorate the CBD is well overdue. The business community has told us this and we have listened and taken action.
“Singapore is a green oasis that thrives in a humid tropical climate, and we can learn a lot from them about transforming Darwin, particularly in relation to using cutting edge architecture, building vibrant centres and designing heat mitigation strategies.
“The delegation will meet with world renowned architect Richard Hassell and connect with urban renewal project leaders with a view to use lessons learned in the Darwin CBD redevelopment.”
The trip follows the signing of a MOU with the Federal Government which will pave the way for a City Deal for Darwin that will drive investment, infrastructure and jobs for the region.
Mr Gunner said the City Deal is a significant step towards the Federal Government matching the NT Government’s $100 million CBD commitment.
The NT seven-person delegation – which includes Government architect Lawrence Neild – will examine land use planning and urban design in a tropical context by creating liveable cities and encouraging innovation.
World-renowned architect Richard Hassell will brief the NT contingent, showcasing his award-winning projects.
