The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport has released details of an updated design for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project.

The T2D Project is the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor (NSC), and represents the largest single infrastructure investment in South Australia’s history.

Design changes to the Northern Portal include:

  • Minimal impact on Kings Reserve during construction
  • Additional green space provided for the community
  • No impact to Hindmarsh Cemetery plots or access
  • Less residential property acquisition impact
  • Surface-level road next to Brickworks Marketplace

Design changes to the James Congdon Drive include:

  • New northbound off-ramp after Richmond Road
  • Improved connection to Adelaide Airport and western suburbs from motorway
  • Duplicating Richmond Road east of South Road to Railway Terrace
  • New on-ramp to motorway from James Congdon Drive and off-ramp on parallel side
  • Shared use path to be provided over the motorway and South Road

Design changes to the ANZAC Highway include:

  • Elevated structure removed, improving visual amenity
  • Right turn from ANZAC Highway to South Road reinstated
  • Three turning lanes of traffic from South Road onto ANZAC Highway towards CBD
  • Minimal Tree removal and improved amenity at ANZAC Highway

Design changes to the Southern Portal include:

  • Improved motorway connection to Darlington
  • Tunnel portal moved approximately 300m north
  • Motorists have more time and distance to safely change lanes into and out of the motorway
  • Shared use path to be provided over the motorway and South Road
  • Improved design of motorway making it easier for construction and less disruption to traffic

The South Australian Government announced that an Alliance contracting structure, capable of delivering multiple packages of work, will now be adopted to deliver the T2D Project.

The procurement process is now expected to commence in January 2023, with the contract awarded in 2024.

An overview of the design changes can be seen in this video.
