The New South Wales Government has awarded the design and environmental assessment contract for the Medlow Bath section of the Great Western Highway upgrade.
The contract was awarded to MRB Technical Services to refine the design and move the project closer to construction.
Acting New South Wales Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, said the State Government had received three very strong tenders for the design and environmental assessment of the Medlow Bath project – the first stage of the $2.5 billion Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow.
“The Great Western Highway upgrade will improve congestion and provide safer, more efficient and reliable journeys for all road users travelling in, around and through the Blue Mountains,” Mr Toole said.
“With the contract now awarded for the Medlow Bath section, MRB Technical Services will review the strategic design.
“Transport for NSW will work closely with the contractor to refine the design based on community feedback from public consultation held in July and August, with the aim of progressing the upgrade to formal environmental assessment in mid-2021.”
The Medlow Bath section of the Great Western Highway upgrade extends from Station Street to 400m south of Bellevue Crescent and is expected to improve access to local streets and businesses, while enhancing pedestrian safety.
Once the design is refined, there will be opportunities for more community feedback in mid 2021.
Meanwhile, registrations of interest have closed for the design and preparation of environmental assessments for the eastern section of the upgrade, from Katoomba to Blackheath – excluding Medlow Bath – and the western section from Little Hartley to Lithgow. Tenders will be invited in October 2020.
