The South Australian Government has released a new concept design and animation showing how the final Main South Road duplication project will come together.
The duplication has been funded jointly by the Federal and South Australian Governments.
Once completed, the project intends to provide safer, faster journeys for motorists and give a vital boost for local tourism and communities, while supporting over 900 jobs each year during construction.
The details showing how the final project will come together have now been released for community feedback.
Stage two of the project will include the realignment of Aldinga Beach Road intersection and Sellicks Beach Road intersection.
To improve traffic flows, stage two will include an underpass at the intersection of Main South Road with the newly re-aligned Aldinga Road and Aldinga Beach Road. Two U-turns will also be installed to facilitate local access in addition to the Aldinga interchange.
Intersection upgrades will also be undertaken at Hart and Colville Roads, Norman and Rogers Roads, and Hahn and Cox Roads.
The project will also see the installation of wide centre medians, wire rope safety barriers to separate northbound and southbound traffic, with some removal of vegetation necessary to improve sight distances and allow for increased road width.
South Australia Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Tom Koutsantonis, said the state government was looking forward to reviewing the community’s feedback on the concept design.
“The roads in this region connect so many important districts — the Fleurieu and its key tourist and beach areas, the McLaren Vale wineries and of course numerous growing communities. Ensuring safe connection and accessibility will allow this region to continue to thrive”, Mr Koutsantonis said.
South Australia State Member for Mawson, Leon Bignell, said the infrastructure would serve the region for decades to come.
“This is a key project for this region, which will make it easier for local, interstate and overseas tourists to get from the mainland to Kangaroo Island, as well as facilitating better freight movement,” Mr Bignell said.
“From 2024 we will have bigger Kangaroo Island ferries doing more daily crossings from Cape Jervis.”

Early work is expected to commence in mid-2023, with major construction expected to begin in late 2023.
