The Level Crossing Removal Project has settled on designs for the removal of current level crossings and the construction of a new road and rail bridge.

The $355.5 million package will see two dangerous level crossings removed in Melbourne’s west. This will be followed by the creation of a road bridge near the Old Geelong Road level crossing in Hoppers Crossing and a rail bridge over the Werribee Street level crossing in Werribee.

It follows earlier confirmation of a new road bridge design and a contract awarded to remove the Cherry Street level crossing in Werribee.

In Hoppers Crossing, the road bridge will be built closer to the city and the Old Geelong Road crossing will be closed, to be replaced with a new pedestrian overpass.

At Werribee Street, a rail bridge will be built to cater to the existing freight route and future passenger growth, with network improvements planned as part of the Western Rail Plan and Suburban Rail Loop.

A temporary track will be built during construction to ensure important freight services can continue to run.

Raising the rail line between the Werribee Racecourse and Werribee River will also create new open space and complement Wyndham City Council’s investment in Wyndham Park. Discussions are ongoing to finalise this space.

In partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Project, an alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald and Metro Trains Melbourne has been awarded the contract to deliver this work.

This alliance has already successfully removed three level crossings across Melbourne, most recently completing a new road bridge in Laverton to remove the Aviation Road level crossing.
