Engineering rarely takes centre stage. Its influence is embedded in the infrastructure we use, the structures we live in and the systems we rely on. It connects communities, underpins economies and helps build resilience across every sector.

It may not always make headlines, but its impact is everywhere.

That’s why the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards matter.

Culminating in a national gala this November, these awards celebrate the ingenuity, precision and persistence behind Australia’s most consequential engineering achievements. Spanning disciplines and generations, the awards highlight the people and ideas driving the profession forward – from early-career breakthroughs to legacy-defining contributions.

Why recognition matters

Engineering is a discipline often measured in outcomes: bridges that hold, networks that run, energy systems that endure. But behind every outcome lies a process of critical thinking, methodical refinement and ethically sound decision-making.

That process is often invisible. These awards make visible the decisions, collaborations and creative leaps that define engineering at its best.

Award nomination categories

Project of the Year Award

From community-led initiatives and cutting-edge technologies to major infrastructure and everything in between, Project of the Year Award celebrates excellence across the full spectrum of engineering.

Projects from all disciplines may be recognised for achievements in areas such as:

  • Innovation and technical ingenuity
  • Sustainability and environmental leadership
  • Community and societal impact
  • Infrastructure resilience and emergency response
  • Defence and national security
  • Creative project delivery or design

Engineer of the Year Awards

The Engineer of the Year Awards cut across technical levels and career stages to celebrate individual engineers making a measurable difference.

Award categories include:

  • Professional Engineer of the Year
  • Engineering Technologist of the Year
  • Engineering Associate of the Year
  • Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year
  • Emerging Engineering Technologist of the Year
  • Emerging Engineering Associate of the Year

Distinguished Career and Achievement Awards

The Distinguished Career Awards honour engineers whose long-standing contributions have helped shape the profession.

Key honours include:

  • Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal
  • Honorary Fellowships

Meanwhile, the Achievement Awards take a closer look at excellence within disciplines. Delivered by Engineers Australia’s technical colleges and societies, these awards celebrate standout work in areas like biomedical engineering, infrastructure risk, design and transport systems.

Notable examples include:

  • David Dewhurst Award (Biomedical College)
  • Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year (Civil College)
  • MA Sargent Medal (Electrical College)
  • John Monash Medal (Engineering Heritage Australia)
  • And others spanning chemical, environment, IT, mechanical, structural, and transport engineering

More than awards – recognising engineering’s essential role

In a world shaped by rapid shifts in climate, infrastructure demand, energy, data and artificial intelligence, engineering is at the heart of how we adapt and innovate.

The Engineers Australia Excellence Awards acknowledge this contribution, recognising work that is both technically outstanding and socially significant.

Nominations close 1 July. For more information, visit: engaus.org/awards
