North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) is planning refurbishment works at Evans Landing Wharf, Port of Weipa, and have appointed a contractor.
The works, being undertaken on behalf of Rio Tinto, will include replacing the wharf deck. Queensland-based Wisely Group is the appointed contractor
NQBP Acting Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Webb, said the tender process is complete and a project start date is being finalised.
“We expect the works will begin in early August and take about three months to complete,” Mr Webb said.
During the works, public access to the Evans Landing Wharf and the nearby parking area will be restricted to ensure public safety.
“NQBP is working with Rio Tinto and operational users of the wharf to minimise disruption to business,” Mr Webb said.
“We recognise that Evans Landing Wharf is used by the Weipa community as a recreational facility as well as being an operational asset for the Port of Weipa.
The works are likely to include:
- Replacement of the wharf deck (from marine ply to concrete panels)
- Repair and replacement of steel members
- Blasting and painting of the steel substructure
- Replacement of handrails
