Excavation works have begun on the $19.4 million State Square Underground Car Park in downtown Darwin.
The rebuilding of State Square and the new underground car park is the first step into rejuvenating the city, and making it a cooler and more public-friendly place and attraction.
The major revitalisation project will create 60 direct jobs and support an additional 165 jobs during construction, and is expected to take around 16 months to complete. Excavation works will last about 10 weeks.
The Northern Territory Government’s CBD revitalisation projects will transform Darwin into a tropical, world-renowned destination, create jobs for Territorians, boost tourism and enhance its liveability.
The new underground car park will relocate four existing surface car parks underground to allow further development of the precinct, free up space to create more parklands and reduce the heat.
The facility will have space for 450 cars, including public parking. This is an increase of 150 car parking spaces from the previous above ground car parks. The facility will also have six Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and have a dual role as a cyclone shelter.
